What is ionic bonding?
Show answer
Ionic bonding happens between a metal and a non-metal. Electrons are transferred from the metal atom to the non-metal atom:
What is covalent bonding?
Show answer
Covalent bonding happens between non-metal atoms. Instead of transferring electrons, the atoms share pairs of electrons so that each gets a full outer shell. Each shared pair is one covalent bond. Water (H2O\text{H}_2\text{O}), oxygen (O2\text{O}_2) and methane (CH4\text{CH}_4) are all covalent.
