What is the collapse of the old multipolar order?

For centuries international politics had been multipolar, balanced among several great powers in Europe. The Second World War destroyed that order. Germany and Japan were defeated and occupied. Britain and France, though victors, were financially exhausted and increasingly unable to sustain their empires or to act as first-rank powers, a decline symbolised by Britain's 1947 withdrawal from Greece and Turkey.
