L1R5 calculator

Enter your O-Level subject grades to work out your L1R5 aggregate — English plus your best five relevant subjects. Lower is better, no signup.

Your subjects

Add each subject and its grade, and tick English (L1). Your L1R5 is English plus the best five of your other relevant subjects. Lower is better.

Estimate only. The real R5 has subject-category rules, and CCA and mother-tongue can give bonus-point deductions this tool does not model. For official aggregates, refer to MOE and SEAB.

How L1R5 works

L1R5 turns your O-Level results into a single aggregate that junior colleges use to compare applicants. You add the points for English (your L1 first language) and the five best of your other relevant subjects (R5). Each grade is worth a fixed number of points, and a lower aggregate is better — the best possible is 6 (all A1).

The grade points this calculator uses:

  • A1 = 1, A2 = 2
  • B3 = 3, B4 = 4
  • C5 = 5, C6 = 6
  • D7 = 7, E8 = 8, F9 = 9

The rule is English (L1) plus your five best other relevant subjects (R5). For example, English B3 with A1, A2, B3, B4 and C5 gives 3 + (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5) = 18.

What this calculator is not

This is an estimate. The real R5 has subject-category rules (your five relevant subjects must come from prescribed groups, not simply your best five grades), and strong CCA records and mother-tongue results can give bonus-point deductions of up to a few points that this tool does not model. For your official aggregate and the full rules, refer to MOE and SEAB.

Common questions

What does L1R5 mean?
L1R5 is a Singapore O-Level aggregate score. L1 is your first language (English), and R5 is the five best of your other relevant subjects. You add the grade points for English and those five subjects, where each grade is worth points from A1=1 up to F9=9. A lower L1R5 is better, and 6 (all A1) is the best possible.
How is the L1R5 aggregate calculated?
Each grade is worth points: A1=1, A2=2, B3=3, B4=4, C5=5, C6=6, D7=7, E8=8, F9=9. You take the points for English (L1) and add the five lowest-point (best) of your other relevant subjects (R5). For example, English B3 with A1, A2, B3, B4 and C5 is 3 + (1+2+3+4+5) = 18.
What is a good L1R5 score?
Lower is better. An L1R5 of 6 to 9 is very strong and competitive for the most popular junior college courses, while many JCs admit students with aggregates in the low-to-mid teens. The exact cut-off point (COP) you need depends on the JC and year, so check the latest COPs for the courses you want.
What counts as an R5 relevant subject?
R5 is made up of five relevant subjects drawn from prescribed subject groups (for example a humanity or mother tongue, a maths or science, and other approved subjects), not simply your five best grades. This estimator just takes your five best other grades, so it can differ from your official L1R5 if your subjects do not fit the category rules.
Do CCA and mother tongue give bonus points?
They can give deductions, not additions, that lower your aggregate. Strong CCA records and good mother-tongue results can each take a small number of points off your L1R5 (typically up to a few points in total). This tool does NOT model those deductions, so your real aggregate may be a little lower than the figure shown.
